Brenning Makes History in Five-Set Loss to Loyola Chicago

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis (8-8, 0-5 Atlantic 10) dropped a hard-fought five-set match to reigning Atlantic 10 Tournament champion Loyola Chicago (7-10, 4-1 A-10) on Tuesday evening at Chaifetz Pavilion.
 
Freshman setter Jetta Brenning turned in a historic performance, notching the program's first triple-double by a freshman since 2006 and the first overall since 2012. She recorded career highs of 12 kills and four aces, along with 43 assists and 13 digs.
 
SET 1: LUC 25, SLU 22
The Billikens opened strong with a 5-2 lead before the Ramblers stormed ahead 16-9. SLU rallied late with a 12-5 run to close within two at 24-22, but Loyola held on to take the opener. The Billikens landed five service aces in the set.
 
SET 2: SLU 25, LUC 15
After an even start, Saint Louis went on a 9-2 run to build a 14-7 lead and forced Loyola to use both timeouts. The Billikens stayed in control and tied the match at one set apiece.
 
SET 3: SLU 25, LUC 21
Neither team led by more than two points early, but Saint Louis pulled ahead 16-13 and maintained its advantage down the stretch to move in front two sets to one.
 
SET 4: LUC 25, SLU 21
Loyola led 11-7 and extended its advantage to 19-14. Saint Louis cut the deficit to four late, but the Ramblers evened the match to force a deciding fifth set.
 
SET 5: LUC 15, SLU 9
Loyola opened with a 7-4 lead and continued to push ahead, outscoring the Billikens 8-5 the rest of the way to close out the match.

  • Saint Louis recorded a season-high 11 service aces.
  • Tamia Maddox had a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs
  • Ellie Rink and Tea Kalajdzic also had double digit kills with 13 and 11 respectively.
