NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Saint Louis women's basketball picked up its second win of the season Tuesday afternoon, edging SMU 70-67 in its Music City Classic opener on the campus of Trevecca Nazarene University.
The Billikens opened with a 5-2 lead before SMU responded with a 9-2 run to go ahead 11-7. The Mustangs kept SLU at arm's length and took a 20-16 lead into the first quarter break.
SLU trimmed the deficit to 23-21, but SMU pushed its advantage to nine at 30-21. The Billikens countered again, closing the gap to 35-33 after holding the Mustangs scoreless for four minutes.
SMU rebuilt a 46-39 lead, but the Billikens answered with a 7-0 run to tie it at 46. SLU extended the surge to an 11-2 stretch to take a 50-48 lead, then added a 5-0 spurt to close the quarter up 55-52.
Saint Louis grabbed its largest lead at 65-58 after an 8-0 rub. SMU pulled within 66-64, but the Billikens made key plays in the final minutes to secure the 70-67 victory.
