Billikens Fall in Five to GW on Senior Day

ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis University volleyball fell in five sets to George Washington in the final home match of the season Saturday.

Set 1: SLU 25 - GW 22

George Washington started the match by scoring the first point, but the Billikens responded with their own offensive surge to gain early momentum. Saint Louis then followed up the initial point with two separate runs, 3-0 and 5-0, giving them an early 8-2 lead.

The Revs fought back after an early offensive push, generating their offense with five blocks in that frame to tie the game at 11-11. Both teams exchanged points in the middle of the set, keeping it tied at 15-15. Set one saw the score tied seven different times.

A late 3-0 run by Saint Louis put them in position to close out the set, but three straight kills by the Revolutionaries tied the game at 20-all before the Billikens finished the set with a pair of kills by Ellie Rink and Tea Kalajdzic.

Set 2: GW 26 - SLU 24

The competitiveness from the first set carried into the second, leading to another back-and-forth battle between George Washington and Saint Louis. The set was tight throughout, with neither team holding more than a two-point lead. In set two, the score was tied 12 times with six lead changes.

The Billikens launched a strong attack in the second set with 19 kills and a .368 hitting percentage. Jetta Brenning also had an impressive set, finishing with five kills and 11 assists.

After a service error by the Revolutionaries, Saint Louis was given a set point at 24-22, but George Washington went on a 4-0 run to close out the set in extras.

Set 3: GW 25 - SLU 22

Set three remained close and competitive between the Revolutionaries and the Billikens until George Washington rallied late to take the lead.

Tied at 14-14, the Revolutionaries went on a 4-0 run to create the first true separation of the set. Tamia Maddox made a late push with an ace and a kill in the final moments of the set but stayed strong in the final moments of set three.

Set 4: SLU 25 - GW 16

A few service aces and a rally of attacks from both teams set up a close score midway through the set. Saint Louis led by two points, 17-15, before the Revolutionaries scored again with a strong outside kill.

That would be the final point George Washington recorded in the set as the Billikens finished on an 8-0 run. Highlighted by three Justina Asamoa blocks in the last six points, the Billikens scored their biggest run of the afternoon to tie the game and force a fifth set.

Set 5: GW 15 - SLU 11

George Washington opened up the final set with a quick 3-0 run, prompting a Saint Louis timeout. After the break, the Billikens came back to take a 6-4 two-point lead, but the Revolutionaries scored seven of the next 10 points to take control, close out the set, and secure a weekend sweep against the Billikens.
