ATHENS, Ohio – Saint Louis (6-7) used a dominant first quarter to defeat Ohio (5-4), 80-74, on Saturday afternoon at the Convocation Center to earn its first road win of the season.
The Billikens opened the game on a 14-0 run, holding the Bobcats scoreless for the first five minutes. Ohio responded late in the quarter to trim the deficit to 23-10 after 10 minutes.
Zhykera Brown scored nine points in the opening period. Saint Louis' defense forced five turnovers, and only two Bobcats scored in the quarter.
Ohio opened the second quarter on a 7-0 run to cut the Billikens' lead to 23-17 and later pulled within three at 29-26.
Jahda Denis hit an and-one 3-pointer late in the quarter to create separation, and Saint Louis took a 35-30 lead into halftime.
Saint Louis opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run to regain a double-digit advantage. The Bobcats answered with a 9-2 run to make it 43-38. The remainder of the quarter went back and forth, and the Billikens carried a 59-50 lead into the final 10 minutes.
Ohio pulled within one at 67-66 with four minutes remaining, but Saint Louis never relinquished the lead. The Billikens closed the game on a 12-6 run to secure the 80-74 victory.
