Billikens Fall After Fourth Quarter Richmond Comeback

RICHMOND, Va. - Saint Louis led Richmond for over 30 minutes of game action, but ultimately fell to the Spiders 59-49 on Richmond's Senior Day.

The Billikens' defense set the tone in the first quarter forcing seven Richmond turnovers. Saint Louis had an 18-7 lead after the opening quarter with help from Tierra Simon's eight points and Brooklyn Gray's seven in the quarter. SLU went on a 12-2 run to close the first quarter.

Richmond entered the game leading the Atlantic 10 in nearly every significant offensive category, yet trailed the Billikens 32-25 at halftime while shooting just 29% through the first half. Tierra Simon shot a perfect six of six with 13 points in the first half.

The second half opened with grinding defensive play from both teams. There were 13 combined turnovers in the 3rd quarter with SLU committing eight of them, but the Billikens were still only outscored by one in the quarter 12-11.

Saint Louis held a 43-37 lead going into the fourth quarter, but Richmond immediately hit back-to-back threes to tie the game for the first time since it was 2-2 in the first quarter. The Spiders defense was too much to overcome as Richmond outscored Saint Louis 22-6 in the fourth.

The Billikens snapped a 23-game double-digit scoring streak for Maggie Doogan, a strong candidate for player of the year within the Atlantic-10. Doogan made just one of seven shots thanks to stifling defense from Kennedy Calhoun and company.

Tierra Simon matched her career-high of 19 points while shooting eight of nine on the day. Brooklyn Gray fouled out late in the fourth quarter with 15 points and three rebounds.

The Billikens will take on the Dayton Flyers back inside Chaifetz Arena Wednesday night with tip scheduled for 7pm.
