ST. LOUIS – The Saint Louis University baseball team completed a sweep of VCU with 4-2 and 12-2 victories in a Friday doubleheader.
Game One
The Billikens struck first in the second inning on a two-run home run by Max McGwire, his fourth of the season.
Hank Gomric added an RBI single in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-0.
VCU got on the board in the seventh, trimming the deficit to 3-1. Saint Louis responded in the eighth with a Hayden Moore RBI single to make it 4-1.
The Rams plated one more run in the ninth, but the Billikens held on for the 4-2 win.
Owen Kelly earned his third victory of the season, allowing one run over 6.2 innings with six strikeouts and two walks. Chase Minor recorded his second save.
Game Two
Hayden Moore opened the scoring in the first with a two-RBI double to give the Billikens an early 2-0 lead.
VCU answered in the third with two runs to tie the game, but Saint Louis responded with a five-run bottom half. Gomric drew a bases-loaded walk before Austin Neuweg launched a grand slam to make it 7-2.
Neuweg homered again in the fourth, a three-run shot to extend the lead to 10-2.
Saint Louis added two more runs in the fifth on wild pitches that scored Brenden Stressler and Moore, enacting the run rule for a 12-2 final.
Josh Cunningham threw the first complete game of his career, striking out five while allowing two runs and one walk.
It was the fourth multi-home run game by a Billiken this season. Neuweg's grand slam was the first of his career and his seven RBIs set a new single-game high for the Atlantic 10 this season.
The sweep was Saint Louis' first over VCU since 2015.
The Billikens return to action Tuesday, April 22, when they host Southern Indiana at Billiken Sports Center. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
