THE BASICS
Saint Louis rode the pitching of
Taylor Hochman and
Isabel Royle and the hitting of
Abby Mallo to a 3-0, 9-0 Atlantic 10 Conference sweep of George Washington Sunday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center.
Â
The game-one victory gave head coach
Christy Connoyer her 400th career win.
Â
Hochman twirled a two-hit shutout in the opener, while Royle tossed a four-hitter in the nightcap. Mallo's 3-for-6 effort in the twinbill included two home runs, one of which was a grand slam, and seven RBIs in game two.
Â
Mallo has 36 career home runs, one shy of the SLU record held by Sadie Wise (2018-22).
Â
GAME 1 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•Saint Louis snapped a 0-0 deadlock with two runs in the fifth.
Chloe Rhine's solo home run, her second round-tripper of the season, started the rally, and an RBI single by
Abby Ulsas doubled the lead.
•The Billikens added an insurance run in the sixth. Mallo led off with a single and advanced on a walk to
Jane Kaniecki. Pinch-runner
Addie Duttlinger moved to third when Rhine was hit by a pitch and scored on
Kendall Johnson's sacrifice fly.
Â
GAME 1 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•The shutout was Hochman's third of the season and sixth of her career. She struck out four.
•Johnson added a single to her sac fly.
Â
GAME 2 – HOW IT HAPPENED
•SLU scored all the runs it would need in the third inning.
Allie Marietta's leadoff single and walks to
Karsen Jany and
Natalie Sullivan loaded the bases for Mallo, who sent her 12th home run of the season well beyond the left-field fence for a 4-0 Billiken lead.
•Saint Louis put itself in position for a run-rule win by scoring five times in the fourth. Johnson led off with a single, and Marietta reached when her sacrifice bunt was mishandled. Ulsas rapped an RBI single, and one batter later, Mallo lifted a towering three-run homer that just cleared the right-field fence. Kaniecki followed with a double and scored on
Scout Gallagher's RBI single to make it 9-0.
•George Washington put two aboard with nobody out in the fifth. But Royle started a 1-5-3 double play to slow the rally and retired the next batter to complete the doubleheader sweep.
Â
GAME 2 – BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Royle collected her first shutout of the year and second as a Billiken. She fanned two and did not walk a batter.
•Kaniecki also had a single for a two-hit game, and Rhine singled.
