MACOMB, Ill. – Saint Louis University dropped a 9-5 decision to Western Illinois on Tuesday afternoon.
The Leathernecks opened the scoring with one run in the first inning.
Saint Louis tied it at 1-1 in the third when
Chase Beattie doubled home
Ethan Sitzman. Western Illinois responded with a run in the bottom of the third and two more in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead.
The Billikens cut into the deficit in the sixth on a
Hank Gomric RBI single, but WIU answered with two runs in the bottom half to go up 5-2.
SLU added two more in the eighth. Gomric drove in Joe Connoly and
Hayden Moore drove in
Max McGwire with two sacrifice flies to make it 6-4. The Leathernecks answered again with four runs in the bottom of the frame to extend the lead to 9-4.
Saint Louis plated its final run in the ninth on a Gomric sacrifice fly, bringing the final score to 9-5.
The Billikens return to action Thursday, opening their final regular-season series at home against George Washington.
