ST. LOUIS — The Saint Louis University baseball team swept its Sunday doubleheader against UMass, winning 18-3 and 10-0, to complete a three-game series sweep.
The Billikens scored a program-record 46 runs in the series against a conference opponent since joining the Atlantic 10.
Game One
SLU opened the scoring in the second inning when
Chase Beattie launched a two-run home run. UMass responded with a run in the third to cut the lead to 2-1.
The Billikens pulled away in the bottom half of the inning, plating five runs.
Riley Iffrig singled in a run,
Brenden Stressler hit a three-run homer, and
Max McGwire followed with a solo shot to make it 7-1.
Beattie added his second home run of the game in the fifth — his third multi-homer game of the season — and Iffrig drove in another run to stretch the lead to 10-1.
SLU exploded for six more runs in the sixth and tacked on two in the eighth with an RBI double from
Ethan Sitzman and an RBI single by McGwire. UMass added two runs in the ninth for the final score of 18-3.
Josh Cunningham earned the win, improving to 5-1. He allowed one run over six innings, striking out four with no walks.
Game Two
Saint Louis took control early with a first-inning RBI from Sitzman. Beattie added a two-run single in the third, and
Kamaehu Sanchez hit a three-run home run to extend the lead to 6-0.
Stressler hit his 11th home run of the season in the fifth, and
Austin Neuweg's sacrifice fly made it 8-0.
Stressler added another RBI in the sixth, and Sanchez capped the scoring with his second home run of the game, giving the Billikens a 10-0 win via the run rule.
Jack Weber picked up the win, allowing three hits over five scoreless innings with no walks.
Charlie Weber closed out the game with two scoreless innings, giving SLU its third shutout of the season.
Saint Louis returns to action Tuesday, May 6, at 5 p.m. at Lindenwood.
