Saint Louis officially opens its 2025 season on Sunday when it takes on the Ball State Cardinals in Muncie. Game time at the Briner Sports Complex is set for 11 a.m. (CT).
ABOUT THE BILLIKENS
Saint Louis' roster is comprised of 11 returners and five newcomers.Â
Returning for her sixth season for the Bills is midfielder Olivia Smith. She was named the league's preseason All-Conference team earlier this week.
Sierra Larson, Abby Vidas, Shaya Dry, Ignacia Manriquez and Brynn Newborn all scored goals last year and are back for the Bills.Â
Both of SLU's goalies return, including Abby Schalow who was named to the league's All-Rookie team.
Last season, the Bills went 2-12 overall and 0-7 in Atlantic 10 Conference play. They graduated Josefina Perez, who ranked among the A-10's top scorers with 12 goals.Â
ABOUT THE OPPOSITION
Ball State opened the season on Friday with a 7-0 home loss to Ohio State. The Cardinals return 13 players from last year's team that 5-13 and 4-4 in MAC. There are eight new players on the Ball State roster.Â
Last season, SLU and Ball State played a competitive game in St. Louis that ended up in a 3-2 Cardinal win in overtime.Â
NEW COACHING STAFF
Sunday's game marks the Billiken debut for interim head coach Laura Hurff. She guided Rhodes College to a 14-6 record last season as interim head coach. An accomplished player in her own right, she was a four-year starter at Syracuse and helped the Orange win the NCAA Championship in 2015.
Assisting Hurff is interim assistant coach Teresa Schmidt, a St. Louis native who played at Bellarmine. Graduate Assistant Bodhi Littlefield was a four-year starter at Ohio.
50th Anniversary Season
This season marks the 50th anniversary of Billiken Field Hockey at Saint Louis University. The program began in 1975 under the direction of SLU professor and former Dutch national team player, Dr. Will van Beaumont.Â
UP NEXT
The Billikens are home for a pair of games next weekend. Ohio is the opponent for the home opener on Saturday, Sept. 6, at noon. Lincoln Memorial then comes to town on Sunday, Sept. 7, for a noon start.
