ST. LOUIS –
Hank Gomric's seventh-inning RBI double gave Saint Louis the lead,
Riley Iffrig's RBI single provided insurance, and the Billiken pitching staff did the rest in a 3-1 victory over Southern Indiana Wednesday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Center.
Drew Kleinheider's leadoff single ignited the decisive rally. Kleinheider advanced to second on
Krew Bond's sacrifice and scored on Gomric's two-bagger. Iffrig followed with a single that scored Gomric for a 3-1 lead.
Max McGwire pitched the final two innings to record a save. Southern Indiana had the tying and go-ahead runs aboard in the eighth and ninth, but three strikeouts – including the final out in both frames – allowed McGwire to escape damage.
Southern Indiana scored its only run in the second off Billiken starter
Caden Earing, who allowed just two hits and a walk in four innings.
Saint Louis pulled even in the fourth. Walks to
Chase Beattie,
Austin Neuweg and
Ian Blazier loaded the bases, and after the next two batters were retired, Kleinheider was hit by a pitch to force in Beattie with the tying run.
Liam McKinney pitched the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to notch the victory. McKinney gave just two hits and two walks.
The Billikens begin a three-game home series vs. Bellarmine on Friday, Feb. 27. Game time is 3 p.m.
