THE BASICS
Abby Mallo clubbed a two-run home run in her first plate appearance of the season, Sophia Boente drove in two runs, and Saint Louis outlasted Montana 11-9 Thursday at the La Jolla Invitational.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
•Mallo's 44th career home run, adding to her school record, put Saint Louis on top 2-0 in the top of the first.
•Montana plated a run in its half of the first.
•The Billikens increased their lead to 5-1 in the second. Bella Stephens and Abby Ulsas collected an RBI apiece on a groundout and an infield single, respectively, and a third run scored on an error.
•Montana answered with two runs in the bottom of the second.
•Karsen Jany's RBI single in the third made it 6-3 Bills.
•The Grizzlies edged closer by scoring twice in the fourth.
•The sixth inning featured eight runs, five of which were scored by Saint Louis. Kate Proffitt drove in the first run with a single, and two more runners scored due to an error on the play. Boente finished the rally with a two-run double for an 11-5 Billiken lead.
•Montana plated a run in the ninth, but the rally ended with the tying run at bat.
 
BILLIKEN NOTABLES
•Isabel Royle recorded the win in the circle, and Anna Christ notched a three-inning save.
•Jany added a double for a two-hit game.
•Mallo and Ulsas tacked on a single apiece for two-hit outings.
•Scout Gallagher singled twice.
•Stephens doubled and Christ singled to complete the Billikens' 12-hit attack.
