ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis opened Atlantic 10 play with an 8-3 victory over Dayton on Friday night at the Billiken Sports Center.
Ben Cherico tossed 7.0 scoreless innings with three strikeouts to earn the win. The outing marked a career high in innings pitched.
Matthew Arnold set the tone defensively early for the Billikens, catching two runners stealing in the first inning.
Hank Gomric sparked the offense with his second home run of the season.
Ian Halverson followed with an RBI single as Saint Louis took a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
The Billikens broke the game open in the third.
Riley Iffrig and
Max McGwire each delivered RBI singles to drive in three runs and push the lead to 5-0.
Saint Louis added two runs in the fourth and another in the sixth to extend the advantage to 8-0.
Dayton scored all three of its runs in the eighth inning.
