PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Saint Louis fell to Saint Joseph's 18-4 on Thursday afternoon at Smithson Field.
The Hawks set the tone early, scoring one run in each of the first three innings to build a 3-0 lead. Saint Joseph's added three more in the fourth to extend the advantage to 6-0.
The Billikens responded in the fifth inning, stringing together three runs to get back into the game.
Matthew Arnold led off the frame with a double and later came around to score, while
Krew Bond and
Chase Beattie each drove in a run.
Riley Iffrig added a sacrifice fly to cap the inning and trim the deficit to 6-3.
Saint Louis added another run in the sixth to make it 6-4, but the momentum quickly shifted back to the Hawks.
Saint Joseph's erupted for five runs in the sixth inning and followed with a seven-run seventh to put the game out of reach.
The Billikens finished with eight hits but were unable to keep pace with the Hawks' late offensive surge.
