Rhody Takes Series Opener, 12-2

ST. LOUIS – Rhode Island defeated Saint Louis 12-2 Friday night in the opening game of a three-game Atlantic 10 Conference series at the Billiken Sports Center.

Rhode Island improves to 15-24 overall and 9-9 in league play, while the Billikens fall to 16-25 overall and 7-11 in the A-10.

The Billikens scored both of their runs in the second inning, jumping out to a 2-0 lead on an RBI double by Joey Canzoni and a sacrifice fly by Austin Neuweg.

Rhode Island responded with four runs in the third inning to take a lead it would not relinquish. Jack Hopko delivered the big hit with a three-run home run, the first of four homers on the night for the Rams.

Rams pitchers Sam Houchens (W) and Joe Sabbath (S) combined to shut down the Billikens, limiting Saint Louis to four hits.
