ST. LOUIS – Saint Louis scored four unanswered goals or a 4-1 victory over Mercyhurst Sunday morning in non-conference field hockey action at the SLU Field Hockey Complex.
It was the first win of the season for the Billikens, who improve to 1-3. Mercyhurst fell to 0-2.
Mercyhurst struck first when Ava Jones scored at the 10:16 mark of the opening period, giving the Lakers a 1-0 advantage.
Saint Louis answered late in the second period, as Ella Kappesser found the back of the cage at 28:28 off an assist from Brynn Newborn to even the score at halftime. It was the first-career goal for Kappesser.
The Billikens took control in the third period. Ella Etherington converted a penalty stroke – the first goal of her career – at 39:58 to put Saint Louis ahead 2-1.
Just over three minutes later, Josie Naeger added her first-career goal at 43:01, with assists from Maddie Croghan and Macy Budd, extending the advantage to 3-1.
Saint Louis added its fourth goal early in the fourth period when Newborn scored at 47:07 on an assist from RB McGowan.
The Billikens dominated the shot department, holding a 21-2 advantage, and earned 11 penalty corners to Mercyhurst's two. Abby Schalow played all 60 minutes in goal for Saint Louis and made one save.
Next weekend, SLU heads to Mount Pleasant, Mich., where it will play Mercyhurst once again on Saturday, and Central Michigan on Sunday.
