MILWAUKEE -
Saint Louis University played to a scoreless tie with league-leading Marquette this afternoon in Conference USA women's soccer action at Valley Fields. The two evenly-matched teams played through a biting cold as defense was the order of the day.
Neither team took a shot in the second overtime period, although the Billikens created a variety of opportunities. The Golden Eagles generated some chances on the counterattack late in the period, but the Billiken defense would not bend.
In the first overtime, Marquette got a breakaway in the 93rd minute. Kate Gordon had Kelly Young (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's) and Katie McDonnell (Chicago, Ill./St. Viator) chasing, but she eluded both to go toward the goal from the near side. Gordon's shot would not arc toward the goal and sailed wide. Jenny Kehl (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) took swipe for the Bills in the 114th minute, but her 40-yard arc sailed just over the crossbar.
The Golden Eagles spent the early stages of the second period on the attack. The Billiken defense was up to the challenge, allowing them just one shot in the second half. With nine minutes left in regulation, Kathleen Schager (Chicago, Ill./Palatine) had the best opportunity for the Bills, driving a ball from just outside the box. Marquette keeper Mo Bothwell was in position for the save.
In a scoreless first half, the Billikens were on the offensive quickly. Kathy Musschoot (Chicago, Ill./Barrington) and Kehl both had shots early that went just wide. The Golden Eagles didn't see their offensive end until the eighth minute and the stingy Billiken defense turned them away quickly and the offensive push was on again.
Saint Louis returns to Robert R. Hermann Stadium on Fri., Oct. 20, to take on Memphis at 7 p.m.
