Hunter Drills 23 Kills, But Billikens Fall To Houston 3-0

St. Louis - Sophomore standout Colleen Hunter drilled 23 kills for the Saint Louis Billikens but it was not enough to overcome the double-doubles posted by Houston's Jennifer Wittenburg and Michelle Frazier as Houston posted a 3-0 triumph over Saint Louis in Conference USA action on Monday. Game scores were 15-11, 15-10, 15-10. Wittenburg notched 19 kills and 13 digs while Frazier added 14 kills and 12 digs.

The Billikens jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game one, but Houston eventually came back and took a 10-7 lead. SLU rallied to tie the game at 10-10, but UH scored five of the next six points. Wittenburg ended the first game with a kill. Stephanie Haskell led UH with six kills and hit .417 to offset the eight kills and .538 hitting percentage by SLU's Hunter. In game two, the Billikens once again grabbed the early lead at 6-0, but the Cougars closed to within one at 6-5. The Bills surged ahead again and held a 10-7 margin before the Cougars tied the game at 10-10. But Houston scored the last five points to take a 2-0 lead in games. Led by Wittenburg's eight kills, Houston hit .362 in the game. Houston grabbed the early lead only to see SLU storm back into the game. The Cougars jumped out to leads of 9-1 and 10-2 before the Billikens scored seven-straight to close to 10-9. The teams traded points and UH edged out to a 12-10 lead before closing out the match with a 15-10 decision.

SLU's Hunter topped the 20-kill plateau for the five-consecutive match and hit .462 en route to her 23 kills. Hunter enjoyed a strong overall game and added six blocks, five digs, three assists and two service aces. Dani Apted led the Billikens with 11 digs. UH's Wittenburg added five blocks to her double-double and Frazier hit .500 for the match. Gabriela Carbone had 15 digs and setter Morgan Wallen handed out 48 assists. Houston out-hit the Billikens .262 to .144 and edged the Bills in digs, 62-59.

Houston wins its eighth-straight match and improves to 12-3 overall, 5-0 in the league. Saint Louis falls to 6-9 overall, 1-4 in C-USA.
