Colleen Hunter pounded down 22 kills on 31 attempts to lead the Saint Louis Billikens to a 3-0 sweep over Memphis in Conference USA volleyball action on Friday evening. Game scores were 15-5, 16-14, 15-3. The Billikens improve to 10-12 overall, 4-6 in C-USA while the Tigers fall to 7-15, 0-9 C-USA.
After a 2-2 early in game one, the Bills rattled off five-straight points to claim a 7-2 advantage. After Memphis scored one point, SLU tacked on three more points and moved on to a 15-5 on a Missy Werges kill. The Billikens played strong defense and posted 21 digs in the game. Game two saw a stunning rally by the Billikens as they claimed a 16-14 win. Memphis held a 14-10 advantage and appeared on the verge of tying the match, but Hunter single-handedly denied the Tigers. Hunter had a kill to side out and then pounded down two kills to bring the Billikens to 14-12. Hunter had a solo block to score another point and she teamed with Shannan Swiney to tie the game at 14-14. Hunter drilled another kill to push the Billikens to game point and Ember Knobeloch ended the rally with a kill at game point. In game three, the Billikens scored nine-consecutive points and eased to 15-3 win.
Hunter, this week's AVCA National Division I Player of the Week, notched a sparkling .645 hitting percentage for the match. After six kills on 11 swings in the first game, Hunter had an unreal 10 kills on 11 attempts without an error in game two for an unearthly .909 hitting percentage. She added six kills on nine attempts in the final game. In addition, Hunter had a match-high 15 digs for the 11th double-double on the year. Shannan Swiney distributed 53 assists and Jessica Moss served up three aces.
The Billikens next play on Tue., Oct. 24, at UAB in a 7 p.m. match.
