Oct. 20, 2000

Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Behind a trio of first-half goals, Saint Louis University women's soccer knocked off Memphis 3-1 in front of 911 fans tonight at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Sophomore Jenny Kehl (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) was on the offensive quickly as she assisted on (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) goal in the eighth minute before netting a pair of her own unassisted goals, including the game winner.

The Billikens controlled the field from the opening touch, out-shooting the Tigers 11-2 in the opening frame. In the eighth minute, Memphis turned the Billikens away at the goal and were pushing out when senior back Kelly Young (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's) redirected the offense with a long ball to Kehl near the top of the box. Kehl turned and laid the ball off to Zaegel on the right side. The sophomore midfielder drove it in over the outstretched arms of Memphis keeper Katarina Wicksell.

Kehl was not finished with her offensive drive. In the 22nd minute she drove the ball from 30 yards out on a free kick. She completed the trio of goals for the Billikens with another strike in the 30th minute. Kehl took the ball just over the center line and dribbled by two defenders on the near side before cutting toward the goal and beating Wicksell to the near post.

The Tigers took five shots on the evening, one of which turned into their lone goal in the 51st minute. Jen Thiele settled a ball at the top of the box after it deflected out of a goalmouth scramble. From 40 yards out she dipped it under the crossbar and over the fingertips of Saint Louis netminder Meghann Burke (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville). The Tigers continued to challenge, but the Billiken defense would not yield.

With the win, the Billikens improve to 11-3-3 on the season and 7-0-3 in Conference USA, while the Tigers fall to 8-9-0 overall and 3-7-0 in the league.

Saint Louis wraps up its C-USA schedule with its final home match of the season on Sun., Oct. 22, when the Billikens host the UAB Blazers at 1 p.m.
