Women's Soccer Wraps Up C-USA With Win Over UAB

Oct. 22, 2000

Box Score

ST. LOUIS - Sophomore midfielder Jenny Kehl (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins) added a goal and an assist to her weekend total as she led the Billikens past UAB 3-1 in Conference USA women's soccer action this afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Kehl opened the game with a goal in the 26th minute and helped cap the scoring with an assist on (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) insurance strike in the 81st minute.

The Billikens controlled the game early with possession in the midfield and a lot of pressure in their attacking third. Kehl and senior Kathleen Schager (Chicago, Ill./Palatine) each took four shots in the match as the Bills out-shot the Blazers 14-6. Saint Louis had numerous chances early, but UAB keeper Lisa Nowoslawski continued to turn them away at the goal line.

Kehl finally put the Bills on the board in the 26th minute. The play generated off one of the SLU's 13 corners. UAB cleared the corner, but junior back Melissa Gossman (Leawood, Kan./St. Thomas Aquinas) settled it just across midfield and fed Kehl up the left side. Clear of defenders, Kehl headed right for the goal and arched the ball into the upper right corner past Nowoslawski's fingertips. The Blazers answered with a goal from Stephanie Davis who flicked a header over the left shoulder of Meghann Burke (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) to tie the score.

The second half was all Billlikens as the Blazers could not get out of their defensive third. Saint Louis put shot after shot on goal until Shannon Myers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) put the Bills up in the 68th minute. Sophomore forward Kathy Musschoot (Chicago, Ill./Barrington) served the ball in from the left side and Myers just got a foot on it to redirect the ball past Nowoslawski from three yards out. Saint Louis wrapped up its scoring with a 10-yard drive from Zaegel that fit just under the crossbar and out of the reach of Nowoslawski. Kehl and sophomore Mandy Trokey (St. Louis, Mo./Notre Dame) combined with quick passing to feed Zaegel.

The Billikens finish the C-USA regular season unbeaten at 8-0-3, extending their league unbeaten streak to 19 games dating back to last season. Overall the Bills are 12-3-3 heading into the season finale at Wisconsin on Sat., Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.
