Billikens Fall at No. 24 Wisconsin

Oct. 28, 2000

Box Score

MADISON, Wis. - Saint Louis University women's soccer dropped a 1-0 match to No. 24 Wisconsin this afternoon. The Billikens (12-4-3) pressured for most of the second half, but had the game-tying goal by sophomore Katie Zaegel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) in the 88th minute called back on an offside call.

With a 1-0 lead at the half, the Badgers took to the offense early in the second period. The Billiken defense, without NSCAA All-Region sweeper Kelly Young (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's), held strong and finally turned the momentum back to the offense. The Badgers' final foray into their attacking third nearly resulted in a 2-0 lead when senior Allison Wagner was fouled in the box and was awarded a penalty kick. The team's leading scorer, Wagner stepped up to the stripe and was stopped by Billiken keeper Meghann Burke (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) on her seventh save of the game.

With the turn in momentum, the Billikens were constantly on the offensive for the final 15 minutes of the match. The midfield put together solid passing to spring Zaegel free in the 88th minute. The sophomore bolted past the UW back and beat keeper Kelly Conway before the linesman called her offside. The Billikens took seven shots on the afternoon, six of which required saves.

Wagner, Wisconsin's leading scorer, put the Badgers up early with a 12-yard drive to the left corner. The Billikens controlled the midfield for most of the half, although the Badgers had the better of play, outshooting Saint Louis 8-2 in the opening period. Both Saint Louis drives required saves Conway.

The Billikens are back in action on Wed., Nov. 1, in the Conference USA Tournament at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Saint Louis will play the day's final game at 7:30 against an opponent to be determined by the outcome of the Charlotte vs. South Florida match on Sunday.
