Dallas - Sixteenth-ranked Southern Methodist shut down Saint Louis University 2-0 tonight in a women's non-conference soccer match at Westcott Field. The Billikens dropped their second straight non-conference match to fall to 9-3-1.

"We played well, but SMU is a good, strong, physical team," Saint Louis head coach Tim Champion said. "We missed some quality chances, and you can't afford to do that on the road against a ranked team like SMU. We have to get back on track on Sunday in Houston."

The Mustangs took command early junior forward Sarah Harvey had a tap-in at 1:53. Crisp passing by midfielder Nicole Lamb and Lorrie Tipton set up the goal. The Billikens had three good opportunities to even the match on break-ins against SMU keeper Becca Lief. Billiken midfielder Mandy Trokey went over the cross bar from six yards. Forwards Anne Lucier and Kathy Muschoot each had shots deflected wide by Lief. SMU out-shot the Bills 6-to-5 in the first half and carried the one-goal lead to the break.

SMU freshman midfielder Kim Harvey put the game away at 75:55. She knocked in a shot that had bounded out of the Saint Louis penalty area after a Mustangs corner. The Billikens still had chances, but Lief made a sensational stop on a break-in by Lucier. Lief collided with Lindsay Potrafke in a one-on-one situation that saw the freshman forward's shot just trickle wide.

Saint Louis sophomore keeper Meghann Burke made three quality stops among her five saves as the Mustangs out-shot the Billikens 15-10. Lief made four saves for the Mustangs.

SMU improved to 9-3-0. Saint Louis resumes Conference USA action on Sunday when the Billikens travel to Houston.
