Saint Louis jumped out to early leads in each game and swept Marquette 3-0 in Conference USA action on Sunday afternoon. Game scores were 15-8, 15-4, 15-8. The Billikens improve to 7-10, 2-5 C-USA, while Marquette falls to 4-14, 3-4 in the league.
The Bills took a 4-1 lead to open the match, but the Golden Eagles stormed back to assume the lead at 6-5. Saint Louis responded with four-straight points and held a 9-8 lead before closing out the first game. The Bills tallied six-consecutive points and won game one on a Marquette error. The Golden Eagles hit -.033 in the first game. SLU scored the first four points of game two and held a 7-1 lead before Marquette called a timeout to slow the Billiken momentum. Marquette tallied two points to make the score 8-3, but the Billikens rattled off six-straight points and Jessica Moss ended the game with an ace. The Billikens appeared as if they were about to cruise to victory and held a 14-1 lead before Marquette made one last rally. The Golden Eagles answered with seven-straight points to make it 14-8, but SLU closed out the match with Shannan Swiney and Ember Knobeloch combining on a block.
Shannan Swiney directed the Billiken offense with 30 assists. Ann Lopata led Marquette with 11 kills and St. Louis-native Annie Richey led MU with nine digs. Gemma Greer handed out 24 assists. The Billikens hit .282 for the match and held the Golden Eagles to a .102 hitting percentage.
