Saint Louis University women's soccer nearly saw a 2-0 lead slip away, but mustered a final goal to seal a 3-2 win tonight at Tulane in the Conference USA opener for both teams. Senior Kathleen Schager (Chicago, Ill./Palatine) tallied the game winner in the 61st minute as the Billikens (5-1-0, 1-0-0 C-USA) capitalized on one of their seven corners.
With her team up 2-1 midway through the second half, Schager gave needed insurance with a goal in the 61st minute. Sophomore forward Kathy Musschoot (Chicago, Ill./Barrington) took the corner kick and served it up for Schager who one-timed it past the Green Wave keeper Jaclyn Urso.
The Billikens controlled much of the game, although the Green Wave held them to under 10 shots for the first time this season. Saint Louis was the aggressor throughout as the Billikens committed 17 fouls to Tulane's 9.
Saint Louis scored twice in the first half to take a 2-0 lead into halftime. Shannon Myers (Cincinnati, Ohio/Lakota West) notched her third goal of the season in the 29th minute. The sophomore midfielder took a pass from Mandy Trokey (St. Louis, Mo./Notre Dame) and headed it past Urso for the early lead. Just three minutes later, sophomore Katie Zaegel (St. Louis, Mo./Nerinx Hall) added an insurance goal off a cross from Jenny Kehl (Fort Collins, Colo./Fort Collins).
Tulane answered Schager's strike with a goal of its own in the 66th minute, but the Billiken defense held back the Gren Wave for the rest of the match. Billiken keeper Meghann Burke (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) recorded her fifth win of the season, making a pair of saves.
"We're glad to start out 1-0 in the conference," head coach Tim Champion said. "It's important to get a good start in the league and get out of this game with a win. Tulane is a good team that worked hard throughout the game. They are going to beat some people this year and I'm just glad we weren't one of them."
The Billikens are back in action at home on Sun., Sept. 17, with a 1 p.m. match with conference rival Southern Miss.
