ST. LOUIS -
Saint Louis University women's soccer dominated the match, putting nine shots on goal, but needed overtime to escape Southern Miss 1-0 this afternoon at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. One day shy of her 19th birthday, sophomore Kathy Musschoot (Chicago, Ill./Barrington) gave her team a present with a goal in the 97th minute. With the win, the Billikens improve to 6-1-0 on the season, 2-0-0 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles fall to 2-4-0 overall and 0-2-0 in league play.
The Billikens were the aggressors throughout the match, forcing action in their attacking third. Good ball movement and physical play in the midfield gave Saint Louis plenty of opportunities. The Bills outshot the Golden Eagles 16-2 in the match, including nine shots on goal and three others that went just wide or over the crossbar.
Musschoot was the heavy striker on the afternoon, taking six stabs at the goal before putting one in the back of the net. Senior sweeper Kelly Young (St. Louis, Mo./St. Joseph's) started the attack with a deep ball from midfield. The pass led Musschoot perfectly into the box where she won the showdown with USM keeper Hope Herron, putting the ball in the back left corner from six yards out.
Sophomore goalkeeper Meghann Burke (St. Louis, Mo./Mehlville) recorded her third shutout of the season, making two saves in the match.
The Billikens are back on the road next week, beginning Fri., Sept. 22 at Charlotte. The team then travels to South Florida for a noon contest on Sun., Sept. 24.
