Sophomore Colleen Hunter hammered down a career-high 30 kills to lead the Saint Louis University volleyball team to a dramatic 3-2 win at Louisville in Conference USA action. Game scores were 5-15, 15-7, 12-15, 15-6, 15-13. The Billikens improve to 6-7 overall, 1-2 in Conference USA. The Cardinals, the preseason coaches favorite, fall to 7-5, 1-2 in the league.
"This is a big win for the team," said head coach Colleen Hunter. Colleen is a franchise player for us and Beth Martin stabilized us with her setting. Jessica Moss, Cristal Leonard and Colleen are our main guns and they all played well tonight. Missy Werges gave us good play and Brooke Minniear played great defense."
The Cardinals stormed out of the gate and hit .385 to take game one. The Billikens played sound defense to even the match, forcing holding Louisville to just a .065 hitting percentage. SLU had one more kill than U of L in game three but the Cardinals edged out a narrow win. Saint Louis hit a match-high .306 in the fourth game to force the decisive fifth game. The rally-scored final game was close throughout, but the Billikens held the lead for most of the game to take the match. The Billikens tied a season-high with 22 block assists.
Hunter hit .368 en route to her 30 kills, had five digs and five blocks. Beth Martin handed out 66 assists on the evening. Sonja Percan led Louisville with 21 kills and Stacey Mercer contributed 18 kills. Five Cardinals reached double figures in digs led by Kelly McClain's 14.
