Field Hockey Billikens Lose Season Opener To League Rival Davidson

August 26, 2000

St. Louis, Mo. - Saint Louis University's field hockey team fell to the Wildcats 2-1 in the initial game of the 2000 season. The Billikens are 0-1 overall and in Northern Pacific conference play.

The Billikens came out strong with freshman midfielder Lindsay Lombardo (St. Louis, Mo. / Nerinx Hall) recording the game's first goal and the first of her collegiate career with just nine minutes having ticked off the clock. Lombardo caught a rebound shot that was deflected from a penalty corner.

Davidson dominated the remainder of the half allowing only one other shot from the Billikens while they recorded 12 shots on goal. Davidson's first goal was sent to the net by freshman forward Agnes Bateman (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) with 15:13 remaining in the period and the assist going to senior midfielder Jennie Gold (Herndon, Va.).

The Billikens failed to regain their focus and played inconsistently during the second half recording only another three shots. Davidson's senior back Lea Jaeger (Morgan Hill, Calif.) was unassisted and she scored the game's final goal with 14:13 remaining.

Junior goalkeeper Erin Linehan (State College, Pa. / State College Area) made nine saves during the match.

The Bills will host Stanford University on Thu., Aug. 31, in a 3 p.m. match at The Anheuser-Busch Conference & Sports Centre.
