Unbeaten Billikens Blank Bearcats 4-0

Cincinnati - Second-ranked Saint Louis overwhelmed Cincinnati in the second half to whitewash the Bearcats 4-0 tonight in a Conference USA men's soccer match at Meyers Field. Hermann Trophy candidate Brad Davis and senior striker Dipsy Selolwane each scored a goal and assisted on two others as the Billikens extended their winning streak to nine.

"We needed to make some adjustments at halftime, because we just weren't quite clicking," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "It's the first time that we've played on Cincinnati's new artificial grass surface, and it took us a while to get used to it. Throw in some rain, and it's the kind of challenging environment that good teams have to play through."

All-American junior forward Jack Jewsbury put the Billikens on top in the 16th minute with a header off a chip to the back post from Davis. Despite being out-shot 8-3 in the first half, the Bills carried the one-goal advantage to halftime.

Saint Louis put the game away with a two-goal burst in less than two minutes. Davis beat UC keeper Sacha Nathu on a break-in off a through ball from Selolwane at 70:20. Senior midfielder Mike Hill scored his first goal of the year at 72:10 on a one-timer just inside the back post after Selolwane laid the ball off to his left.

Selolwane closed the scoring at 80:26 with assists to Hill and Davis. With Nathu off his line, Selolwane went over the top of the UC keeper into the open net. Selolwane has scored in all nine Billiken games, the best goal-scoring streak since Steve Sullivan scored in 11 consecutive games during the 1979 season.

"Every time this group has faced some difficulty, they've answered the challenge," Donigan said. "We finished well in the second half, and Politis was outstanding tonight."

The Bearcats (3-5-3 overall, and 1-3-1 C-USA) out-shot the Billikens 13-10 and had a 10-2 advantage in corners. But Billiken keeper John Politis was on top on his game with nine saves. Nathu made two stops for the 'Cats, and his defense cleared one ball off its own line.

The Billikens' (9-0-0, 5-0-0) nine-game unbeaten streak to start the season is their best since the 1979 Billikens also began with nine consecutive wins. Saint Louis returns to Robert R. Hermann Stadium on Sat., Oct. 20, to host C-USA contender South Florida in a 7 p.m. kickoff.
