Chicago - Second-ranked Saint Louis blanked DePaul 3-0 this afternoon in a Conference USA men's soccer match at Wish Field. Senior midfielder David Beck netted the winner as goalkeepers John Politis and Travis Kamm combined to post the Billikens' second consecutive shutout.
"This was a tough mid-week game played under some tough conditions, and we're just happy with the result," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "This has always been a difficult place for us to play, and it's always a good conference road win when you can get out of here with a win."
Beck got the Billikens on the board early at 9:10. His 18-yard one-timer off a service from Mike Hill was all the support that the Bills would need. Just over 90 seconds later, junior defender Mike Kirchhoff knocked in a seven-yard volley off Hermann Trophy candidate Brad Davis' corner kick. The Billikens carried the 2-0 lead to halftime.
Senior sensation Dipsy Selolwane stretched his goal-scoring streak to seven games in the 65th minute. After taking senior sweeper Marty Tappel's pass, Selolwane spun past a Blue Demons' defender and beat DPU keeper Jash Chavero from 10 yards.
The Billikens out-shot the Blue Demons 12-5 and had a 6-3 edge in corners. Politis made one save, while Kamm was untested. DePaul's Chavero did not register a save.
Saint Louis (7-0-0, 3-0-0 in C-USA) stretched its unbeaten streak to 13 dating back to last season. Meanwhile, DePaul (0-7-1, 0-2-1) saw its winless streak reach eight. Saint Louis returns to Robert R. Hermann Stadium to face Memphis on Sat., Oct. 6, at 7 p.m.
