St. Louis - Saint Louis shut out No. 10 Furman 2-0 tonight in a non-conference men's soccer match before 3,654 fans at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. The Billikens won their seventh straight game as they posted their fifth straight shutout.
"All of my guys stepped up and brought energy and intensity right from the start," head coach Dan Donigan said. "We know this win over a very good Furman team will play a big role for us at the end of the season."
Junior defender Andy Pusateri dribbled 20 yards past three Paladins defenders to put Saint Louis on top in the fourth minute. He broke in on Furman keeper John Hanley and slipped a 10-yard shot inside the left post. It was the first game winner of Pusateri's career.
Furman bid to tie it just 20 seconds later on its first shot, but midfielder Clint Dempsey's 18-yard shot just curved past the far post.
Senior midfielder Jack Jewsbury gave the Billikens a two-goal margin in the 33rd minute. Danny Wynn's long blast from the left flank skipped off a Paladins defender's header, ricocheted off the cross bar and bounded out to Jewsbury. The senior midfielder buried a 20-yard drive inside the right post.
"The first goal was just a great individual effort by Andy," Donigan said. "On the second goal, Jackie showed such great poise to bring that ball down and bury it."
Hanley was on his game in the first half to keep the Paladins in the game. He stopped Cooper McKee on a break-in from eight yards in the eighth minute, made a leaping save on Kevin Wickart's 35-yard attempt headed for the cross bar in the 29th minute and was on the spot to snap Jason Cole's eight-yard shot after a nifty back heel from McKee. The Bills ended the half out-shooting the Paladins 9-3.
Cole continued to be dangerous as Saint Louis kept the pressure up in the second half. The senior forward tested Hanley from 15 yards to the near post in the 54th minute and had his header cleared off the line by a Furman defender in the 58th minute. Furman's Hanley was in perfect position to stop Bills defender Nick Gannon's 20-yard drive as he was the trailer on a three-on-one advantage in the 62nd minute.
Furman picked up the pressure and out-shot SLU 5-3 in the second half, but couldn't break the ice. The Paladins' best chance was on Dempsey's 12-yard shot to the far post, but Billiken keeper Martin Hutton made a leaping save. In the final minute, Shaun Stone's 20-yard drive sailed over the cross bar.
Saint Louis out-shot Furman (8-2-1) 12-8 forcing Hanley to make six saves and his defense to clear one off its own line. The Bills' Hutton made three stops to record his fourth shutout of the season.
The Billikens (7-2-1 overall) entertain Air Force on Wed., Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. at Hermann Stadium.
