St. Louis -
The East Carolina Pirates closed out a three-game series sweep of the Saint Louis Billikens with a 3-1 come-from-behind win on Sunday. ECU registered 10 hits in the game and cameback after the Billikens took an early 1-0 lead.
The Billikens jumped on top in the bottom of the first when pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl pounded a pitch over the fence in centerfield for a solo homer. The blast was Bohnenstiehl's fourth of the season. The Bills were set to do more damage, but ECU starter Nicole Bacon got a strikeout with the bases loaded to end the SLU threat. The Pirates tied the game in the fourth. Stacey Smith reached on a fielder's choice and Amber Gill moved her up a base with a sac bunt. Eva Herron sinlged to left field and Smith just beat out the relay from the outfield to tie the game. The Prates took the lead 2-1 in the sixth when Smith doubled to centerfield, and Gill plated her with a long single. The Billikens had a chance to cut into the lead when Bohnenstiehl doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth, but SLU stranded pinch runner Cori Bittick at third. ECU tacked on an insurance run when Herron hit a ball that just cleared the fence in leftfield for a 3-1 advantage.
ECU's Bacon allowed just two hits after the first inning and gave up just four hits in going the distance. Bacon improved to 14-8 on the season. Bohnenstiehl, who went 2-for-3 on the day, took the loss for the Billikens. The Billikens dip to 12-16 overall, 1-10 in Conference USA. East Carolina improves to 25-14 overall, 7-5 in C-USA.
The Billikens host the Missouri Tigers for a 5 p.m. doubleheader on Tue, Apr. 2, at The Billiken Sports Center.
