STORRS, Conn. - Saint Louis University fell 4-0 to the University of Connecticut in men's soccer exhibition action at Marrone Stadium tonight. The Huskies capitalized on the Billikens' youth, scoring four times in the first half when SLU had seven new starters on the field. UConn out-shot SLU 14-5, which included the four goals and seven saves from Billiken goalkeeper Martin Hutton.
"They are an experienced, mature team, likely the best we'll face all year," Saint Louis head coach Dan Donigan said. "This game was a good experience for us to play against a team that exposes your weaknesses. From this game, we certainly know what we need to work on, which is mostly team cohesion and chemistry."
The Huskies struck first in the 31st minute as Damani Ralph scored on a ball served in from the left corner by Rui Fernandes. The Huskies went up 2-0 on Michael Mordocco's strike just two minutes later after a tangle in front of the goal. In the 35th minute, the lead went to 3-0 when Leandro de Oliveira's shot deflected off the heel of SLU defender Joe Hammes.
The Billikens were much more solid in the second half, holding the Huskies scoreless in the period until Ian Quattrocchi rounded out the scoring with just over three minutes remaining.
Saint Louis hosts its final exhibition game Sat., Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. against UCLA at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
