Louisville - Saint Louis blanked Louisville 2-0 tonight in a Conference USA men's soccer match before 2,034 fans at Cardinal Field. Senior Jason Cole scored the winner and assisted on the other goal as the Billikens posted their fifth straight victory.
"We played well and created a lot of opportunities in their box," head coach Dan Donigan said. "With the first half scoreless, it was a matter of staying patient and not getting frustrated."
Cole pumped in his career high fourth goal of the season at 56:15 off a long diagonal pass from junior back Kevin Wickart. Cole chested the pass and pumped a low line drive past Cardinals keeper David Gisler from 13 yards.
Billiken defender and Louisville native Ntando Tsambo netted the insurance marker at 80:26. After a strong run by Cole into the right side of the Cards' penalty area, he cut back and set a cross to the far post where Tsambo connected with a diving header.
The Billikens out-shot Louisville (2-6-1, 0-1-0) 15-7 and had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Billiken keeper Martin Hutton made three saves to record his third consecutive shutout. Gisler made
"It was a good, solid win and to get our first road win of the year in a conference match was important," Donigan said. "We Louisville mostly looking to counter attack, we did a good job defensively of limiting any chances."
The Billikens (5-2-1 overall, 3-1-0 C-USA) return to the comforts of Robert R. Hermann Stadium this week as Saint Louis hosts a pair of non-conference foes. Eastern Illinois pays a visit on Wed., Oct. 2, at 7 p.m., and Furman comes to won on Sat., Oct. 5, for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
