Milwaukee - Thirteenth-ranked Saint Louis fell to Marquette 1-0 tonight in the Conference USA men's soccer opener for both squads at Valley Fields. The Billikens' (0-2-1) season-opening winless streak stretched to three.
"We played pretty well, but the little things continue to hurt us," head coach Dan Donigan said. "Even when you're playing well, the game can be won or lost in a split second, and that's what happened tonight."
A pair of Golden Eagles seniors combined on a set piece to put Marquette on top at 15:53. Off midfielder Bryan Godfrey's corner kick, midfielder Mike Robards beat Billiken keeper Martin Hutton to the cross and connected on a three-yard header.
The Billikens had a couple of offensive flurries in the first half, but senior defender Tom Nolan kept the Bills off the board. Freshman midfielder Cooper McKee beat MU keeper Adam Ubert with a shot, but Nolan was positioned perfectly on the goal line to knock it away harmlessly.
Senior forwards Jack Jewsbury and Nick Walls combined for the Billikens' best chance in the second half. Jewsbury's cross was targeted for the unmarked Walls at the far post, but Walls couldn't quite get to it in time.
Saint Louis out-shot the Golden Eagles (1-1-0, 1-0-0) 15-7.
The Billikens (0-2-1 overall, 0-1-0 in C-USA) host Southwest Missouri State in the Billikens' regular-season home opener on Fri., Sept. 13, at 7 p.m. at Hermann Stadium.
