Greenville, N.C. - Saint Louis midfielder Cooper McKee scored with just over three minutes remaining and the seventh-ranked Billikens topped East Carolina 2-1 this afternoon in a Conference USA men's soccer match at Bunting Field. The victory extended the Billikens' road winning streak to six.
"We played a disciplined game to come up with a good conference road win against a much-improved East Carolina team," head coach Dan Donigan said. "Even though we gave up a late goal, we demonstrated the poise and composure to overcome it."
Billiken leading scorer Vedad Ibisevic put Saint Louis on top in the 25th minute on a breakaway. Billiken freshman defender Dan Guffey picked up his first career point by putting Ibisevic in on ECU keeper Brian Pope. Ibisevic slipped a shot underneath Pope to the right corner. The Billikens carried the one-goal advantage to halftime.
The Pirates tied the match in the 84th minute. Robb Cann drove a 25-yard knuckler that eluded Billiken keeper Martin Hutton in the lower left corner.
The Billikens quickly responded in the 87th minute off a corner kick. ECU's Pope attempted to punch clear SLU midfielder John DiRaimondo's corner, but the ball bounced to McKee. The Bills' sophomore midfielder sent a dipping 25-yard volley into the upper right corner.
East Carolina (3-4-2 overall, 0-3-1 C-USA) and the Billikens each had seven shots, although SLU had a 6-4 edge on corners. Hutton was forced to make only one save, while Pope stopped four Billiken shots.
Saint Louis (7-1-2 overall, 2-1-1 C-USA) completes a two-game road swing with an afternoon date at DePaul on Wed., Oct. 8.
