John Nets Winner at DePaul

CHICAGO - Saint Louis University posted a 1-0 win at DePaul in Conference USA men's soccer action this afternoon at Wish Field. Freshman Will John netted the game winner in the 62nd minute to back the shutout goalkeeping of sophomore Jeff Sackman. With the win, SLU improves to 8-1-2 overall and 3-1-1 in C-USA, while DePaul falls to 4-7-0 and 1-2-0 in the league.

"We faced a tough team in a difficult environment this afternoon, so it's good to get a hard-fought conference win on the road," SLU head coach Will John scored a workmanlike goal to put us on top."

The Billikens were the aggressors early, taking the ball to the goal throughout the first half, during which they out-shot the Blue Demons 8-1. DePaul keeper Michael Timlin was up to the challenge, turning away three of the Bills' most dangerous opportunities in the period.

SLU finally got on the board in the 62nd minute to break the scoreless tie. Freshman midfielder Alex Matteson tracked a ball into the corner and sent a serve into the box. The DePaul defense cleared the cross, but the ball ended up on the foot of freshman Casey Spiess who sent a shot just wide. John found himself on the end of the wide shot and was able to one-time it past Timlin for the goal.

DePaul looked to knot the game with more dangerous opportunities late in the second half, forcing Sackman into three saves in the stretch. The Blue Demons' Edwin Arreola had the best chance with a six-yard header off a corner that Sackman collected to preserve the win.

The Billikens are back in action on Sat., Oct. 11, against USF at Robert R. Hermann Stadium.
