Billikens Slam Savannah State, 73-33

ST. LOUIS - Saint Louis held Savannah State scoreless for the first 11:22 and coasted to a 73-33 win tonight in a men's non-conference basketball game at Savvis Center. The Billikens set a Savvis Center record for least points allowed

"We defended and executed for both halves, no matter that the score was getting out of hand, so that pleased me," Billikens head coach Brad Soderberg said. "It gave us a chance to reward people who are working hard in practice and give us a chance to evaluate people under game conditions."

The Billikens moved out to a 15-0 lead, before Tigers guard John Lundy nailed a jumper at the 8:38 mark. The Bills held SSU to 16 percent shooting (4-25) in the first half as they built a 33-10 halftime lead. Senior guard Josh Fisher led the Bills in the first half with 10 points.

Saint Louis didn't ease off the defensive pressure in the second half as the Bills allowed only one basket in the first 7:53. "Coach told us at halftime that it's scoreless and that we needed to keep our defensive focus," said senior guard Phillip Hunt, who contributed a career-high eight points in a career-high 26 minutes. "We did that and were able to get a lot of guys into the game, so it was a good night."

The Billikens limited the Tigers to 23.5 percent shooting from the field and 30.8 percent from threeland. SLU came up with 16 steals while forcing 27 Savannah State turnovers. Forward Sherard Reddick led the Tigers with nine points.

Fisher finished with a game-high 17 points while adding four assists and four steals. Senior forward Chris Sloan contributed 14 points, three assists and four steals. Senior forward Izik Ohanon added 11 points, three boards, three assists and two steals. Saint Louis shot 50 percent from the floor and 78.9 percent from three.

The Billikens are 2-0 to begin a season for the first time since the 1999-2000 campaign. Saint Louis concludes its three-game homestand by entertaining North Carolina A&T on Sat., Nov. 29, at 1:10 p.m.
