Billikens Capture Share of C-USA Men's Soccer Title

Birmingham, Ala. - Sixth-ranked Saint Louis topped No. 20 UAB 3-1 in a Conference USA men's soccer match tonight at West Campus Field. The Billikens share the C-USA regular-season title with Cincinnati.

"Our entire team met an emotional and physical challenge tonight on the road against an extremely talented team," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "It was UAB's Senior Night. They still had a chance for a first round bye in the C-USA Tournament, and the rivalry between these teams has become intense. So, we overcame a lot of road blocks tonight."

Saint Louis capitalized on its limited first half chances, while UAB had the better of the possession time. Billiken keeper Martin Hutton was on his game right from the outset and made a leaping save at the left post on forward Jerson Monteiro's 15-yard drive. Billiken leading scorer Vedad Ibisevic put SLU on top in the eighth minute after a Blazer defensive misplay. SLU's freshman forward buried a hooking 15-yard shot past Blazer keeper Jeremy Drake.

Although the Blazers out-shot the Bills 9-2 in the first half, SLU scored on both its shots. On a quick restart in the UAB half, Bills freshman midfielder Will John on the left side of the Blazers' penalty area. John's volley bounced inside the right post. Meanwhile, UAB's Monteiro continued to be dangerous. Hutton tipped Monteiro's 20-yard drive over the cross bar in the 25th minute, and Monteiro's flick with 10 seconds left in the half went off the bar.

Early in the second half, DiRaimondo was fouled just outside the top of the UAB area. John bent the free kick on the ground around the Blazers' wall just inside the left post in the 62nd minute.

Blazers forward Leandro de Oliveira put the Blazers on the board in the 75th minute with an 18-yard shot from the left flank to the right post. Jose Rayo picked up the assist.

UAB (9-4-5, 4-3-2) out-shot the Bills 15-6 and had a 10-0 edge on corners. Drake made four saves for the Blazers, while SLU's Hutton made four stops.

Saint Louis (12-3-2 overall, 6-2-1 C-USA) will be the No. 2 seed when the Bills open play in the C-USA postseason tournament beginning Wed., Nov. 14. Cincinnati is the No. 1 seed by virtue of their regular-season win over the Bills.
