College Park, Md. - Seventh-ranked Saint Louis University men's soccer dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 2 Maryland in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals at Ludwig Field this afternoon. The Billikens (15-4-3) got off to an early 2-0 lead, but saw the Terrapins (20-2-1) score four goals in an 11-minute period that spanned halftime.
The Terrapins stormed out in the second half, netting a pair of quick goals. A.J. Herrera served the corner into the near post, and, after a pair of Billiken defenders slipped in the box, Kenney Bertz slipped the ball past SLU keeper Martin Hutton into the left side netting. Jason Garey made it a two-goal lead in the 48th minute off a through ball from Seth Stammler.
The Billikens jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead despite being outshot 16-4 in the first half. Freshman Alex Matteson got things going with his strike in the seventh minute. Freshman Will John touched it back to Matteson who originally overran the pass but back-heeled it just inside the right post.
Senior back Kevin Wickart put the Bills up 2-0 in the 33rd minute off a corner. DiRaimondo served the corner, and John's initial shot was stopped by UM keeper Noah Palmer. Wickart cleaned up the rebound.
The Terps cut the lead in half in the 34th minute as Clarence Goodman's header off Nino Marcantonio's corner got past Hutton. Maryland tied it up after another corner. Marcantonio served it into the box, and, after a mad scramble at the goalmouth, Abe Thompson put it in the back of the net.
With the win, Maryland advances to the tournament semifinals against the winner of the St. John's/Creighton match.
