In a tightly contested battle, eighth-seeded Charlotte (10-10)
advanced to the quarterfinal round with a 4-1 victory over ninth-seeded Saint Louis
(7-12). Charlotte's Jonathan Clark claimed the win with a three set victory over
Thomas Kwong at the no. 3 spot 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. The two matches at the no. 1 and no. 2
spots were late in the third set when the match was clinched.
The 49ers opened up a 3-1 lead after taking straight-set matches at the nos. 5 and 6
spots. David picked up a win at no. 5 spot, 6-1, 6-4 over Sanjeev Paramanthan.
Earlier, Jonathan Vencatachellum claimed a win at the no. 6 spot, beating Taylor
Curran, 6-1, 6-4. Saint Louis had briefly tied the match at one when Tom DeLarzak won
at the no. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-1 over Christofer Bowman.
Charlotte took a 1-0 lead after a battle for the doubles point. After splitting at
the no. 2 and no. 3 spots, no. 1 doubles was hotly contested. The two teams went to a
tie break and Charlotte picked up a key double fault to go up 4-2 in the tie break
before eventually winning it 7-4.
Charlotte advances to meet top seed Tulane at noon on Thursday at Heyer Park (A).
Saint Louis will play Marquette in the ninth-place semifinals on Thursday at 11:30
a.m. at Heyer Park (B).
