Billikens and Bears Split Softball Doubleheader 4-1 and 8-3

St. Louis - Saint Louis University pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl (Lebanon, Ill. / Lebanon) tied the school record for wins in a season when she notched her 14th victory in a 4-1 win over visiting Southwest Missouri State in the first game of a softball doubleheader at The Billiken Sports Center. Bohnenstiehl also broke the career RBI record in the game with a sac fly to drive in the 66th run of her career. The win was the first for the Billikens over the Bears since 1980 and broke a 22-game losing streak to SMS. The Bears earned a split of the doubleheader by taking game two 8-3. The Billikens are now 17-14, while SMS is 23-20.

In game one, the Bears had the opportunity to grab an early lead when they loaded the bases with no one out. But Bohnenstiehl induced two infield popups and registered a strikeout to end the threat. SLU's Ashlee Heady singled to bring home Kerri Higgins with the first run of the game in the bottom of the third inning. The Billikens tacked on two more runs when Adrie Bogaars lashed a bases-loaded single to center to push the SLU lead to 3-0. Bohnenstiehl helped herself in the fourth when she lifted a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth to put the Billikens up 4-0. SMS broke up the shutout bid in the sixth when Stacie Wattie singled and scored on Larissa Shepherd's double to left. Bohnenstiehl closed out the sixth without any further damage and retired the Bears in order in the seventh. She had six strikeouts and gave up just five hits to pick up the win.

The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when Larissa Shepherd launched a solo homer to right center. The Bears tacked on a second run when Ashley Meredith doubled home Christy Serwein in the third inning. The Billikens closed to 2-1 in the bottom of the third. Ashlee Heady RBI single to centerfield. SMS built the lead to 5-1 with three runs in the fourth. Bonnie Jones led off the inning with a solo home run and the Bears used three other hits to push across two runs. The Bears took advantage of four walks, a SLU error and one hit to generate another three runs in the fifth and push the advantage to 8-1. The Billikens tacked on two runs in the seventh when Adrie Bogaars. Schomaker scored on Melissa Quist's groundout to make it 8-3, but the Billikens were unable to add any more runs. Lindsey Major went the distance for the Bears for her fifth win of the season.
