Greenville, S.C. - Fourth-ranked Saint Louis scored twice in the second half and blanked No. 19 Clemson 2-0 tonight on the first night of Furman's Soccer Classic at Eugene Stone III Stadium. Freshman midfielder Martin Hutton notched his second shutout.
"We've beaten two of the best ACC teams in the last week, so we're moving in the right direction," head coach Dan Donigan said. "We sorted some things out early, but came on strong and kept attacking. We're extremely happy with the direction this group is headed."
Clemson had the early edge with two dangerous corner kicks and a potential break-in that was snuffed by Billiken defender Kevin Wickart. But the Billikens came on midway through the half and controlled the better portion of the latter stages.
Billiken freshman midfielder Ryan Wileman's feed and shooting wide of the left post from 10 yards. In a goalmouth scramble in the 27th minute, Clemson goalie Phil Marfuggi topped SLU midfielder David Peplinski on the doorstep. Off a DiRaimondo serve, Wileman's header went high in the 31st minute.
In the 39th minute, freshman midfielder Will John was high from 18 yards while running across the top of the CU penalty area. At the break, Clemson had a 7-6 edge in shots, while Saint Louis had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Saint Louis got on the board at 50:10 as freshman midfielder Casey Spiess made a nice move along the right endline and sent a pass right in front of the goal to find DiRaimondo unmarked. DiRaimondo merely tapped it in to the open goal. The assist was the first of Spiess' career.
The Billikens continued their assault as DiRaimondo sent a 35-yard bullet past the right post in the 54th minute. Moments later, Ibisevic also was just wide from 20 yards. In the 64th minute, Ibisevic was set up by John, but his 10-yard shot was wide. John sent Ibisevic in all alone in the 67th minute, but CU's Marfuggi stoned him.
Hutton made the save of the day for SLU at 20:35 when he came out to challenge Tiger midfielder Brad Gibson's 12-yard drive and turned it away. Ibisevic finally gave the seemingly relentless Billikens a two-goal edge at 71:51. From the right flank, John's serve found Ibisevic breaking to the left post where his six-yard volley found the back of the net.
The Billikens chose to defend the rest of the way and held off a few Clemson flurries. Saint Louis ended up out-shooting the Tigers 17-14, but Clemson had a 9-7 advantage on corners. Hutton made four saves to record the shutout, while Marfuggi stopped three Billiken shots.
The Billikens face host Furman at 1 p.m. (CT) on Sunday afternoon.
