In dominating fashion, Saint Louis defeated Appalachian State 4-2 this afternoon in NorPac Conference play at the Anheuser-Busch Center. The Billikens improve to 3-6 and earn their first conference win of the year. The two teams square off again tomorrow afternoon at A-B with a 1 p.m. tip.
SLU came out firing with a 12-2 shot margin in the first half taking a 3-0 lead. Junior Carin Boone was the first to score at the 7:21 mark with an unassisted goal. Putting the Bills up 2-0 was senior Ellen Rapp, assisted by freshman Ashlea Hibshman seven minutes later. Senior Marissa Lynn earned the eventual game-winning goal, assisted by Boone, just after one of SLU's five first-half penalty corners at the 20-minute mark.
The Mountaineers fought back early in the second half capitalizing on two penalty corner opportunities by Lizzie Watson at the 39- and 45-minute marks rallying to just a 3-2 deficit. ASU's Carrie Johnson assisted on both goals.
Feeling the pressure, the Billikens turned up the heat with sophmore defender Michelle Sinclair taking advantage of another penalty corner opportunity, with the assist from Lynn. The Bills took the 4-2 lead throughout the remaining six minutes of play.
The Billikens out shot the Mountaineers 17-6 and were aided by an 8-5 penalty corner advantage. Junior netminder Julie Moeckel earned the win and has a 1.81 GAA. Junior Mountaineer keeper Kate Rino recorded the loss and falls to a 4-9 season record.
Rapp leads the team with 19 points (5G, 1A) with Lynn just behind her with 11 points (2G, 6A). The duo has been honored three times this season as NorPac East Division Offensive Players of the Week, Rapp twice and Lynn just last week.
Saint Louis will entertain ASU again on Sun., Oct. 17, at 1 p.m., at A-B. Rapp and Lynn will be honored in Senior Day activities just prior to the match start.
