Saint Louis Overwhelmed By Gonzaga, 75-45

SPOKANE, Wash. - Sophomore forward Adam Morrison poured in a game-high 20 points as No. 25 Gonzaga rolled past Saint Louis 75-45 tonight in a non-conference men's basketball game at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The Billikens' season-long shooting woes continued as SLU shot just 31.5 percent in their fourth consecutive loss.

"I truly respect everything that Gonzaga has done as a program - their system, the players to fit their system and the atmosphere, everything is just terrific," Billikens head coach Brad Soderberg said. "Morrison is my favorite player of all the teams we've faced so far. He's a scoring machine, and he plays with a passion that is admirable."

In a defensive struggle in the opening moments, the Billikens held the Bulldogs scoreless for the first 3:30 until guard Erroll Knight scored at the 16:20 mark. However, SLU couldn't score for the first five minutes until senior forward Izik Ohanon got the Bills on the board with 14:48 to play. Gonzaga opened up a 13-2 lead before SLU guard Darren Clarke knocked down a triple from the left corner.

Billiken senior guard Reggie Bryant kept the Bills in the game by scoring SLU's last 10 points of the first half. The Zags carried a 32-17 lead to the break despite All-America center Ronny Turiaf's scoreless first half as he played only seven minutes because of foul trouble. Morrison picked up the slack by popping in 11 points.

The Zags led by as many as 32 points in the second half before settling for the final margin. Gonzaga (7-1) became the first team to shoot better than 50 percent from the field against the Billikens this year as the Zags shot 52 percent from the floor, 33 percent from the arc and 79.2 percent from the line.

Bryant led the Bills with 16 points, and junior forward Vas'Shun Newborne added 12. Along with their struggles from the field, the Bills also shot only 45.5 percent from the free throw line.

The Billikens (1-6) return to Savvis Center on Wed., Dec. 15, to face winless Oakland (Mich.) in a 7:10 p.m. tip-off.
