Men's Basketball Saint Louis Athletics

Saint Louis 58, Chicago State 52

Recap |  Final Stats

Junior Center Ian Vouyoukas
On shooting 3-of-10 from the field: "It was a little frustrating because the shots I missed were relatively easy ones, and I know tomorrow I will be working on those jump hooks all day."

"I didn't know we shot 16 percent (in the second half), that is awful. We played good defense at the same time, for the most part. Down the stretch we were able to make some defensive plays like some blocks and steals."

Junior Forward Justin Johnson
"After the Hawaii game, Coach (Soderberg) and I had a talk about what I had to do to improve and what I had to do to get on the floor and earn his trust. That is what I have been working on for the past month. I just approach the game with a whole different attitude from what I used to."

"After our loss to UW-Milwaukee, we had a meeting amongst ourselves, and decided we will approach every game like it's the championship game. We cannot take any nights off against any opponent, or else instead of winning, we are going to lose. So we just have to get our minds right every time, every game."

Saint Louis Head Coach Brad Soderberg

"I think Chicago State deserves a lot of credit. That sure didn't look like a 1-8 team. I would hate to have a schedule where you play ten straight road games against the people they've played against.

"As it relates to my team, quite frankly I'm very disappointed. I was so encouraged by our effort and execution on both ends of the floor last week against Gonzaga, and I'm equally disappointed - not about our effort - but our poor execution and some knucklehead plays. If I would accept those errors when we win, and not accept them when we lose, then I'm not doing my job as a coach. We got a quick turnaround for the Iowa game and we are going to do some correction stuff tomorrow, whether it's just watching tape or breaking down into some tough drills I don't know. But we have to get some stuff cleaned up."

"There is a thing that sticks in my head from (former Wisconsin coach Dick) Bennett. He mentioned before you become a good team, you have to eliminate the factors that cause you lose. Those factors are: turning the ball over, giving up offensive rebounds, giving up transition baskets, committing foolish fouls and not making free throws. Because those things really don't have a ton of bearing on who you play, but have more bearing on what you do. We were not solid in those areas, and that is why we were lucky we won. I have coached teams before that has had those kind of numbers and lose the game, so maybe that is a sign of a good team that can find a way even when it is difficult."

On the play of Ian Vouyoukas: "He was a dominant center today who missed shots he normally makes. I know he missed four jump hooks within five feet in the first half, and then he didn't shoot free throw the way I have come to expect of him in the second half. He didn't have a very good game but still scored 17 which shows you what kind of dominant player he could become."

On Justin Johnson: Anyone who watches us, you can see it. He is becoming a legitimate power forward that needs to be reckoned with. He makes his free throws, has a good delivery with his shot, he's a good offensive rebounder and defender. I'm very pleased with that, because he is going to take a lot of pressure of Ian if he keeps coming along."
