Men's Basketball Saint Louis Athletics

Saint Louis 69, Jackson State 53

Recap |  Box Score

Senior guard Anthony Drejaj:

On his three's down the stretch: "I got into the gym early today and got a few extra shots in. It felt good. I just had an opportunity to get a lot of good looks in the zone they were playing and I knocked them down.

On Jackson State: They came here to play basketball. We knew they weren't going to lay down. We kept playing our defense, they were justt knocking down some tough shots. They played a good game tonight I thought. We didn't blow them out, but we still played a pretty good game. It was a good margin and we kept our distance from them.

On Wednesday's game at North Carolina: Ever since I've been here, we've scheduled a big-name school. I think we will approach it like every other year, they are just another team. We are going to try to make it the toughest game of the year for them.

Freshman guard Tommie Liddell: The were locking in a lot on me when I was going to the hole, and unfortunately my shots weren't falling. I think I just got to get a lot more aggressive, and the shots will come for me. On a couple of my shots, I tended to fade away when I don't need to. I need to start working on going straight up and shooting over the defender.

Junior center Ian Vouyoukas: On being in foul trouble: It's a little frustrating to sit down in the first half because I want to help the team. When I first came back in the second half I was a little cold and out of rhythm, but as the game went on I got into it more.

On Jackson State's run: We were up the whole game and we knew we needed to put them away but they started making some shots, but then our defense stepped it up and we were able to extend the lead once again.

On Wednesday's game at North Carolina: I'm excited to play that game. Once I saw it on the schedule I marked it down because it is such a historic school, and it will be a great opportunity for us as a team to show people what we are made of.

Head coach Brad Soderberg:

I'm happy with the win. I think things would have been better if we would have finished six feet and in. I think we did a better job defending than we did at UWM.

On the play of Drejaj: I'm not surprised by that because I know he can make three's. He has worked very hard on his own. I'm happy for him, because he has put in the time, and I like it when guys that put in the time get rewarded. And we needed it tonight, he helped us get out of a little rut there.

On Wednesday's game at North Carolina: I've aspired to some really big things at this school. I want to become a national player. I believe you have to expose your players to that setting occasionally. That is why we played at Arizona, Gonzaga, Iowa, that is why we are going to Ole Miss and North Carolina. If you talk about it but never expose your guys to what it is, then I think you are not being real with them. They are very excited right now, and that is a great thing. For me it will be an honor to coach against Coach Williams. It's just a great big-time setting. I think if we play as well as we can we have a chance. I could be crazy but stranger things have happened.
