Omaha, Neb. - Saint Louis opened its exhibition season with a 1-0 win at Creighton.
"Our theme has been defense throughout training so far, so this was a good first outing for us," Billikens head coach Dan Donigan said. "When we were scoreless at halftime, I told the guys that this is why we play these types of preseason matches - to see how we handle playing against a great team on the road in a tough environment."
The PK resulted from a good build-up on the right flank, and DiRaimondo whipped a ball to freshman midfielder Dado Hamzagic who was open at the far post. A Bluejays defender took Hamzagic down before he could get to the ball for a header. DiRaimondo sent the PK low to the right of Jays goalkeeper Matt Allen.
Creighton out-shot the Billikens 11-9 and had a 4-2 edge in corner kicks. Billiken sophomore Pat Disbennett played the first half and recorded a save, while junior David Greathouse also picked up a save while playing the entire second half. Hamzagic and fellow freshman Larry Geraghty topped the Bills with two shots apiece.
"It was great exhibition for both teams, because I think that we both learned a lot from it," Donigan said. "All of our guys got into the match, and everyone played well. I was proud of the effort."
Saint Louis hosts a doubleheader on Tue., Aug. 23, at Robert R. Hermann Stadium. Missouri-St. Louis and Washington (Mo.) University square off at 5 p.m. followed by the Billikens and Lindenwood.
