Box Score
Saint Louis freshman guard Tommie Liddell
This gives us a lot of confidence. We knew they weren't going to beat themselves, and we were trying not to beat ourselves. This gave us a lot of confidence because their pressure really turned up during the end of the game and we were able to withstand it.
On how the team won despite committing 23 turnovers: Basically our defense and we rebounded the ball well. We knew that the game wasn't going to be a high-possession game so we just tried to make every possession very valuable.
On his rebounding success in the past three games: I try to do anything to help the team win, anything to get us extra possessions. It's important Especially in a game like this where it was a low possession and a low scoring game.
On Temple's defense: It was tough. I never saw a zone defense that you could really not penetrate. There were guys all over, and they all have long arms and are tall and athletic. It was very difficult to throw it inside, but luckily we were hitting our outside shots today.
Saint Louis freshman guard Kevin Lisch
On Temple's defense: I still really don't know what their defense is. They cover the whole half court it seemed like. We haven't seen this before, so the turnovers are natural. We just wanted to stay aggressive.
On getting ball inside to Ian Vouyoukas: "With their long arms, it was tough for us to get the ball inside a lot of times. But Ian really helped us a whole lot on the defensive end by (contesting) shots and getting rebounds. Even though he maybe didn't do it on the offensive end, he was still just as valuable.
Temple head coach John Chaney
On the play of Dustin Salisbury and Antywane Robinson: They were not effective at all, at all. I don't understand it. One of them will come off the floor for now on. You can't have three guys on the floor that can't make field goals, foul and now they are not playing good defense. I don't know what happened to them, maybe they are sick I guess. I haven't a doctor examine them, but one of them will not start the next game.
We can't shoot, we just can's shoot. We've had this problem all year. Our defense is normally effective, but we just couldn't capitalize.
On the play of guard Mardy Collins: Mardy took a lot on his shoulder because the other two guys were not effective. They had two or three broken plays that we set up for them to shoot and they went the wrong way.
Saint Louis head coach Brad Soderberg
General Remarks: I'm really happy we won and relieved because if we would have found a way to lose that one it would have been very painful and really would have been a tough lose to recover from. Again, our defensive allowed us to have some problems offensively in the end and still survive. Bottom line is, I didn't know we would be 14-10 at this time of the year and be in fourth place in the A-10. It is really fun to be playing for something, because a year ago we were just struggling for survival.
I really want to compliment our kids for hanging in there and making good shots. I said in pregame that you don't beat Temple without making shots, because Coach Chaney has that system down to science and they force you to make shots from the perimeter, and if you don't make shots you lose, it's that simple.
Normally I would be flipping out about 23 turnovers, but it's not like we weren't the first team this year that has committed 23 turnovers on them. They designed that system for that exact purpose.
I was happy to see us get off the shneid right away from the three-point line, because with this team I have noticed that if we miss a few in a row it becomes contagious and I was just happy to see a couple of them go in. I thought it loosened up Temple's defense a little in the first half, because they had to stretch out even further to get to our shooters.
This group is surpising some in that they have been very resilient, and I pointed that out a lot during that weird streak we had. Everybody was commenting about how inconsistent they were, and I said no, they are very consistent, they bounce back from every loss. And now the only difference is we are not playing a lot better or a lot worse, we are just finding ways to win.
On Liddell and Lisch: I'm not surprised by the way these kids are. I'm honest when I say they are not surprising me with the way they play. When I recruited them I knew these were special kids, I was just praying I could get them to committ, and how excited I am to know we are going to have them for more years. Over the course of this conference season, these two guys have done incredible things.
On how they prepared for Temple's defense: We ran our zone offense against six defenders. When we got in from Pittsburgh on Thursday, we just shot for an hour, and we ran for an hour our zone offense against six defenders. And the same thing on Friday, an for the first time all season during our shootaround, we practiced. We didn't play against five defenders all week, we played against six the whole time. And I'll bet you we should have played against seven defenders to make it even more realistic.
On post-season aspirations: I've said it for probably eight games now that there is noone on this schedule we cannot beat. But there is noone on schedule that can't beat us as well. I've challenged them to think big, dream big, but then come back to work on Monday. I don't want the dream big, and then they be goof balls at practice and come out soft against Rhode Island. But if I would squelch their dream of making the NCAA Tournament, or getting a bye in the conference tournament, then I think I'm not helping them be motivated. To have a chance to play for something at this time of the year is something you don't take for granted.
