Cleveland State Box Score | Columbia Box Score
Kissimmee, Fla. - Allison Appenfeller's first RBI of the season came at an opportune time as it lifted Saint Louis to a 3-2 victory over Columbia on Monday at the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. With the score tied 2-2, Appenfeller singled to second base to plate Logan Justice for the eventual game winning run in the top of the sixth. SLU starter Ashley Levan held Columbia in check to secure her third victory of the season. It was a big win for the Billikens (3-10), who had lost 2-1 against Cleveland State earlier in the day.
Against Columbia (7-5), SLU jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first after AshLeigh Williams singled home Christy Ernst for the first run of the game. Williams later scored on a Columbia error to give the Billikens a 2-0 advantage.
Columbia would tie the game after plating runs in the first and second inning.
Justice started the SLU sixth inning with a single to left center and advanced to third after a Levan sacrifice bunt and stolen base. SLU's game of small ball paid off as Justice was able to score on Appenfeller's infield single.
Levan (3-2) was the winner in the circle for SLU, allowing only two runs in the complete game. She scattered six hits struck out seven.
Against Cleveland State, SLU mounted a seventh-inning rally but dropped the decision 2-1. Trailing 2-0, the Billikens loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh but only plated one run off of CSU starter Kortney Spidell.
CSU (7-1) jumped on top in its half of the first when Whitney Williard, who reached on a double to start the inning, scored on a Michele Penney triple.
CSU tacked on another run in the top of the sixth when Amber Lowe reached on an error to lead off the inning. After stealing both second and third base, she scored on a Christa Coppus sacrifice fly.
Down 2-0, SLU engineered a two-out rally in the bottom of the seventh. Christy Ernst reached on an error by the shortstop to load the bases for Ashlee Heady, who hit a sharp grounder to third that plated Heet. With the bases still loaded and SLU now trailing 2-1, Spidell got Williams to ground out to third to end the game.
SLU out-hit CSU 9-4 but stranded nine runners on the base paths. Floccari was the tough-luck loser for the Bills after allowing just one earned run on four hits. She struck out three batters and walked only one.
The Billikens return to action at the Rebel Spring Games on Tue., Mar. 14, in an 7:50 a.m. (CT) tilt with Wagner. The Bills then face Army at 11:30 a.m.
